5 days in our campsite by Susan
Five days in Cancale, Saint-Malo and Mont-Saint-Michel, my review
Spending five days at the campsite Le Bois Pastel in Cancale in 2022 was an experience that left me enchanted by the natural beauty, cultural richness, and tranquil environment of Brittany. As an Englishman traveling in a motorhome, I was looking for a peaceful escape, and this campsite, nestled in a lush wooded area, provided exactly that and more.
"Le Bois Pastel" the campsite
From the moment we arrived, I was struck by the serene atmosphere of Le Bois Pastel. The campsite is surrounded by tall trees that offer a sense of seclusion and shade, making it a perfect retreat for families, couples, or anyone seeking to unwind. Despite being well-equipped with modern facilities, the campsite retains its rustic charm. We found the pitches spacious and well-maintained, with enough room to comfortably park our motorhome and set up an outdoor seating area. The staff were warm and welcoming, providing helpful tips about the area and ensuring our stay was comfortable.
Le Bois Pastel truly felt like a home away from home. The calmness of the surroundings was complemented by the friendly community of campers. Children played freely on the well-kept playgrounds, while adults enjoyed the peaceful environment with a book or a leisurely stroll. One of my favorite aspects was the morning ritual of walking to the reception area to pick up fresh bread and pastries. Nothing quite beats starting the day with a flaky croissant and a cup of coffee in the midst of nature.
Cancale
Our days were filled with exploration and discovery, as Cancale and its surrounding areas offer a wealth of attractions. The town of Cancale itself is a charming seaside village famous for its oysters. A visit to the port is an absolute must. We strolled along the harbor, admiring the bobbing fishing boats and sampling fresh oysters at one of the many stalls. The taste of oysters, paired with a splash of lemon juice and the salty sea breeze, was unforgettable.
The coastal walk from Cancale to the Pointe du Grouin was another highlight. This scenic trail offers breathtaking views of the rugged coastline and the emerald waters of the Bay of Mont-Saint-Michel. We took our time, stopping frequently to take photos and soak in the beauty of the surroundings. For nature lovers, this walk is a must-do.
Saint-Malo
A short drive from Cancale brought us to the historic city of Saint-Malo. Known for its well-preserved medieval architecture and rich maritime history, Saint-Malo is a place that captures the imagination. We spent a day exploring the walled city, or "intra-muros." Walking along the ramparts, we enjoyed panoramic views of the city and the sea. The cobbled streets, lined with shops and cafes, were bustling with life. We also visited the Cathedral of Saint-Vincent, a beautiful example of Gothic architecture, and enjoyed a leisurely lunch at a creperie, savoring traditional Breton galettes and cider.
Mont-Saint-Michel
No trip to this region would be complete without a visit to Mont-Saint-Michel, and our journey there was nothing short of magical. The iconic abbey rising dramatically from the tidal island is a sight that takes your breath away. We arrived early in the morning to beat the crowds and were rewarded with a tranquil experience. Walking up the narrow, winding streets of the village felt like stepping back in time. The abbey itself is an architectural marvel, and the views from the top are spectacular. The play of light and shadow on the surrounding sands during low tide added an almost ethereal quality to the experience.
While our days were filled with sightseeing, the evenings were spent relaxing back at the campsite. We often cooked simple meals in our motorhome, enjoying the fresh local produce we had picked up from nearby markets. One evening, we joined a group of fellow campers for a barbecue, exchanging stories and laughter under the starlit sky. It was moments like these that made the trip truly special.
More time
Despite all that we managed to see and do, five days were not enough to explore everything this region has to offer. We missed visiting the nearby Île-de-Batz, exploring more of the Emerald Coast, and delving deeper into the local culture and history. However, these missed opportunities have only given us a reason to return.
In reflecting on my time at Le Bois Pastel and in Cancale, I realize how much this trip meant to me. The combination of natural beauty, cultural richness, and the warm, welcoming spirit of the locals made it an unforgettable experience. The campsite itself was the perfect base, providing a peaceful retreat while being conveniently located for exploring the region.
I left Brittany with a full heart and a sense of longing to return. Cancale and its surroundings have a way of captivating you, leaving you with memories that linger long after you’ve left.
For anyone considering a visit, I cannot recommend it enough. Just make sure to give yourself more than five days to fully immerse yourself in all that this incredible place has to offer.
